Located 360
Km. North of Vientiane (about eight hours by public bus, or 35 minutes
by Lao Aviation). Once the former capital of Laos during the Lanexang
Kingdom in the 13th and 15th centuries. It's importance as an historic
and cultural site has been acknowledged in UNESCO's (United Nations
Educational Scientific and Cultural Organization) listing of the
town as a World Heritage site in 1995 ensuring the preservation
of a mixture of traditional Lao and French colonial architecture
giving Luang Prabang its unique character and charm all of its own,
and helps to make it the most popular tourist destination in the
country. Local temples of Luang Prabang are considered the most
beautiful in Southeast Asia.
The
Royal Palace
Built between 1904 and 1909, during the reign
of King Sisavanvong, the former residence of the Lao Monarchy is
now a museum. A collection of artifacts belonging to the former
rulers of the Kingdom of Lane Xang is housed in the palace.
Wat
Xiengthong Temple
Built by King Saysethathirath and completed in
1560, one of the most interesting forms of arts and architecture,
housing the boned of King Sri Savangvong. An original design, with
a unique three-layered roof well worth visiting and paying respects
when in Luang Prabang.
Wat
Visoun Temple
Built in 1503 by order of King Visounarath, who
named the temple after himself. It is know for the larger, unusually
shaped stupa placed in the grounds. Because of its Shape, the stupa
is known as "That Makmo" or "Watermelon Stupa".
Wat That Chomsi Temple
Located at the top of Mount Phousi in the heart
of town, the Stupa was built in 1804, during the reign of King Anourouth
and is a symbol of Luang Prabang's spiritual significance to Laos.
Tham Ting Cave
Just a short trip down river either by road or
boat where the Nam Ou river meets the Mekong river, a large cave
replete with hundreds of Buddha images.
Accessible only by boat and only in the we season, Tad Sae is divided
into three limestone steps, ten-minute ride up the Nam Khane river.

Kouang Si Waterfall
This impressive waterfall is located about 30
Km. South of Luang Prabang. You can take a tuk-tuk from the center
of the city, or rent your own transport. The trip to the waterfall
passes through beautiful scenery, as well as many villages belonging
to ethnic minorities.
