　３名の留学生の方々に、現在電通大生として心に浮かぶことを短い手記にまとめてもらい、それをインタビューで少し掘り下げてみました。彼らの出身国は、ブルンジとインドとメキシコです。この中で特に日本人に馴染みの薄いのはブルンジ。北はルワンダ、東と南はタンザニア、西はコンゴ民主共和国とタンガニーカ湖に囲まれた東アフリカの国です。面積は小さいけれど、伝説的なおもてなしの心、高品質のコーヒーや紅茶の生産、豊富な国立公園や自然保護区などで有名です。一方、インドとメキシコは一見馴染がありそうですが、話を伺っていると我々があまり知らない一面が見えてきます。

　インタビューを通じて、戦火の影響による困難の中で与えられたチャンスに挑む逞しさに感心したり、私達が普段気付かないでいる日本の技術による世界貢献を再認識したり、何気ない野川の夕焼けに垣間見る比類なき日本の美しさにハッとさせられたりと、意外と奥深い事情が見えてきます。

　We asked three international students to write short memoirs about what comes to their minds as current students at UEC, and then we delved a little deeper into them in interviews. Their countries of origin are Burundi, India, and Mexico. Of these, Burundi is particularly unfamiliar to the Japanese. It is an East African country bordered by Rwanda to the north, Tanzania to the east and south, and the Democratic Republic of Congo and Lake Tanganyika to the west. Though small in size, Burundi is famous for its legendary hospitality, high-quality coffee and tea production, and its abundant national parks and nature reserves. India and Mexico, on the other hand, may seem familiar at first glance, but listening to their stories reveals aspects that we know little about.

　Through the interviews, we become impressed by the author’s resilience to take on the opportunities presented to him amidst the difficulties caused by the war, we are reminded of the contribution that Japanese technology has made to the world, which we are usually unaware of, and we are awestruck by the unparalleled beauty of Japan as seen in a casual glimpse of the sunset over the Nogawa River.
