TCHICALI K. F. Patrick

Hello! My name is Patrick. I came from Cameroon. Since my childhood, I wanted to come to Japan at least once in my life. After I graduated high school, I decided to apply for Japanese Government Scholarship (MEXT) to study in Japan. Then, I finally came to Japan as MEXT student.

Before I came to Japan, I concerned about many things for my new life in Japan because I had to leave my family, settle down in new place by myself and learn totally new language, etc. Honestly, after I was selected as MEXT student, sometimes I was not certainly sure whether I wanted to go to Japan or not. But, I asked myself again what I wanted to do.  In addition, I noticed the time, when I needed to go ahead to challenge something new, had come to me.

Studying in abroad is a unique and amazing experience you cannot compare with others.  I believe that students should use this wonderful occasion effectively. Learning many things through finding attractive culture, studying new language and getting new knowledge, is given us an opportunity to meet new value or new philosophy. This raises questions about own standards which are based on society where a person grew up. Also, it gives a chance to see all issues from a different point of view.

I have already known what I wanted to do and a path I wanted to choose in my life before I came to Japan. I am very fond of programming and video game. I enjoy creating as well. So I decided to find a university in Japan to suit my purpose.

In my first year in Japan, I have studied Japanese language at Osaka University. When I was in Osaka, I attended University Admissions Guidance Fair which was held at Osaka University. 2 UEC faculty members came to the fair to introduce UEC.  After their introduction, I had asked them some questions. I checked the information of UEC by myself after the fair as well. Then, I decided to choose UEC for my undergraduate program. There are several reasons why I chose UEC, but I give you 3 main reasons why I chose UEC in this message.

Firstly, UEC values “theoretical and practical education” in their curriculum. Compared with other universities, I can say that it is one of their characteristic points. It is obvious that the theoretical knowledge is important. Likewise, the practical skills are also significant because an engineer actually has to prepare to face many problems. Hence, UEC makes the multifactorial curriculum in their education system which all students can obtain the practical education as their core.

Secondly, it is often said that “Statics and numbers never lie. “ I believe it is true. Many UEC alumni are playing significant roles in various fields.  Especially, Mr. Ken KUTARAGI who is known as “The Father of Play Station “is one of UEC alumni I admire.  He was CEO of Sony Computer Entertainment from 1997 to 2007. Like Mr. KUTARAGI, UEC has many other talented alumni.

Thirdly, UEC is located in Tokyo. The location is also one of the advantages for students. Living in Tokyo gives them many choices and good opportunities. For instance, the students can do their internship at global companies, such as SONY, Nintendo, Rakuten or Sharp, etc. , and can learn many things through the internship. Doing internship at such global companies can be huge advantage when the students do the job hunting.

Many people often ask me, “Is it hard to study your major in Japanese at university?” or “Is it too difficult to take classes for you, especially science field, because you only learnt Japanese for 1 year? “ But I always answer them, “Don’t you think it is strange if everything could finish easily? “ I hope everyone remembers that studying abroad is worth to doing even if it is hard.

Native Language

        Je m’appelle Patrick et je viens du Cameroun. Depuis tout jeune, j’ai toujours rêvé de visiter le Japon, ne serait-ce qu’une seule fois dans ma vie. Donc, après avoir complété mes études secondaires au Cameroun, j’ai postulé pour la bourse du gouvernement japonais (Monbukagakusho-Gakubu), pour poursuivre mes études au Japon.

        Toutefois, de nombreuses raisons m’ont amené à presque douter de ma volonté de partir : comme quitter mes proches, la possibilité d’avoir des difficultés d’adaptation et le simple fait de devoir apprendre une nouvelle langue même pas parenté à ma langue natale etc… mais il vient toujours ce temps où il faut écouter sa volonté et faire le pas ultime.

        Avoir la possibilité de partir à l’étranger poursuivre ses études est une opportunité semblable à nul autre dont il faut en profiter au max. La possibilité de découvrir une culture intrigante, apprendre une nouvelle langue, et des tant d’autre défis qui tout en nous enrichissant intellectuellement, nous permettent d’être confronté à des nouvelles valeurs, et philosophies. Cela nous pousse à remettre en question nos valeurs jusqu’à lors prédéfinit pas la société d’où nous venons, et cela nous permettent de voir les choses sous un tout nouveau angle.

Pourquoi l’Université d’Electro-Communication, Tokyo (UEC) ?

        Avant de venir au Japon, je peux dire avec fermeté que je connaissais déjà sur quel chemin je voulais me lancer.  J’aime programmer, j’aime les jeux vidéo et plus que tout j’aime être à l’œuvre. Des cours magistraux et fortement théorique sans pratiques n’est pas mon truc. Donc, avec ces objectives en tête j’avais comme but, trouver une école qui corresponds à mes critères.

        Au cours de ma première année au Japon, quand je prenais des cours de japonais intensif à l’Université d’Osaka, pendant « 大学説明会 Séance d’Information pour les concours d’entrée à l’Université » des professeurs de cette école sont venus à Osaka pour présenter l’école.  Après les avoir écouté, et après des centaines des questions j’ai donc décidé de faire mes propres recherches. Apres, j’ai décidé de venir à l’UEC pour des raisons innombrables, mais je vais citer les plus pertinentes, ci-dessous ;

        Premièrement, le système d’études mi théorique mi pratique de cette université la distingue de la masse. Donc, aussi importantes que les leçons théoriques sont, des ingénieurs doivent être disposés à faire face aux problèmes du monde réel, raison pour laquelle la formation dans cette université est multidimensionnelle avec la pratique au centre du curriculum. 

        Secondement, comme on dit chez moi « les statistiques et les chiffres ne mentent pas. » L’UEC est le berceau des plusieurs élites dans le monde technologique. Notamment, mon model de vie, Ken Kutaragi considéré comme le « père de la PlayStation », fut le PDG de Sony Computer Entertainment entre 1997 et 2007, et tant d’autres que je ne pourrais tous citer.

        De plus, la proximité a la mégapole de Tokyo rend cette Université un choix en or, je pourrais tout en étudiant faire des stages de formation dans des grandes multinationales comme SONY, Nintendo, Rakuten, Sharp etc… Et faire des stages dans ces coopérations donne un avantage professionnel par rapport à une personne étudiant outre part.

        Pour conclure, plusieurs personnes me pose toujours la question « Mais, est-ce que, ce n’est pas difficile ? Apprendre une nouvelle langue pendant juste un an et puis entreprendre des études scientifiques ? » Et moi je réponds toujours la même chose, « Ne serait-il pas étrange si tous étaient bizarrement facile ? » Dans tous les cas, sachez qu’il vaut la peine de faire des études à l’étranger.
