The 3rd Forum (October 6-9, 2008)
Oct 6 through 9, 2008 the 3rd ICT Triangle Forum was held at Information and Communications University (ICU) in Korea. This trilateral annual event started back in 2006 to enhance collaborative interaction for research and education within the Triangle, the three institutes in Japan, China, and Korea whose major academic disciplines are Information and Communications Technology.
The 1st Forum was held here at UEC and the 2nd Forum at Beijing University of Post and Telecommunications (BUPT). This year was the 3rd Forum, and the Triangle’s coordination and cooperation brought another success to the Forum with multiple interactive events of academic and student exchange.
From UEC, 14 faculty members and 14 students participated to make 19 presentations in the Academic Exchange Program and 9 presentations in the Student Exchange Program. BUPT made a total of 32 presentations in both programs, the same number as ICU did. Presentation entries increased, compared to the previous year.
Four main events took place in the 3rd Forum:
- Academic Exchange Program
- Student Exchange Program
- The Triangle Coordination and Cooperation Meeting
- Technical Tour
1. Academic Exchange Program
The Triangle Symposium on Advanced ICT (TriSAI2008) was held as the Academic Exchange Program. More than a hundred, including attendees from Korean corporations, participated either in the Regular Sessions or the Student Sessions. Starting with the plenary session on the morning of Oct 7, in which Prof MIKI Tetsuya, UEC, made the keynote address, the three days Symposium generated wide-ranging information exchanges in the field of ICT.
Two presentations from each Angle for the two Sessions were selected for the Best Paper Awards, and UEC award winners are:
<Regular Session> Associate Prof. Takeo FUJII,
<Student Session> Masami IZUMI, Dept. of Information and Communication Engineering

2. Student Exchange Program
As in the previous year, TriSAI2008 Student Session was organized for the Triangle graduate students to make research presentations and to be immersed in cultural exchange. The session framework, program creation, and in-session chairpersonship were all managed by the Student Committee exclusively made of the Triangle students, and it allowed them to gain experiences in working together on international activities.
One-minute aural Short Presentations for introducing their researches and a 2-hour Poster Session were carried out in two days. UEC student committee members took chairpersonship in the Short Presentations on the first day. There were 9 presentations by UEC, 18 by BUPT, and 15 by ICU which created vigorous discussion.
The Triangle students also took a part in Volleyball Match, the first sport event in the Forum. Each Angle formed a student team to play a match in a round-robin competition. As games heated up, voices cheering on the players swelled. Yet, doing-it-for-fun stayed in the air to the end. Students and faculty volunteers additionally formed mixed teams and played another match. All teams were created on the spot but team members were quick to work together in achieving their goal irrespective of their age, sex, status, or even nationality as ICU, the host of this year, intended.

3. The Coordination and Cooperation Meeting
During the Forum, the Triangle faculty members had a series of opinion exchanges for strengthening cooperation and coordination. UEC particularly made suggestions and explanations of ICT Project Based Learning (PBL) for internationalization to be programmed in the future Forums. This is the program in which the Triangle students are assigned to a certain ICT project and compete with each other in teams of mixed members, aiming to train them for higher expertise and international communication skills. It was decided at the meeting that the Triangle would study further the means for implementing a PBL program and that UEC would be the next host.
