Frequently asked Questions

Q1. Is it possible that my name on my resident card is written in both alphabets and kanji (漢字)?

A1. When you submit your application file to the Immigration Office, submit the "在留カード漢字氏名表記申出書 (Request for Kanji Name on Residence Card)".

Download the form: https://www.moj.go.jp/isa/applications/procedures/nyuukokukanri10_00019.html

Only Japanese Kanji characters can be used. Traditional Chinese characters (繁体字) and simplified Chinese characters (簡体字) cannot be printed on the residence card.

Q2. Should I apply for an "資格外活動許可 (APPLICATION FOR PERMISSION TO ENGAGE IN ACTIVITY OTHER THAN THAT PERMITTED UNDER THE STATUS OF RESIDENCE PREVIOUSLY GRANTED)" even if I do not plan to work part-time job(s)?

A2. Normally, you need to go to the Immigration Office twice just to get this permission. Even if you do not plan to work part-time job(s) at present, ISO recommends that you apply for it together with the extension of your period of stay.
If you have "Student" resident status, you can apply for this permission with no details such as "未定(Undecided)". (Comprehensive Permission).

Q3. Do I need to apply for "在留カード漢字氏名表記申出書 (Request for Kanji Name on Residence Card)" and/or "資格外活動許可(APPLICATION FOR PERMISSION TO ENGAGE IN ACTIVITY OTHER THAN THAT PERMITTED UNDER THE STATUS OF RESIDENCE PREVIOUSLY GRANTED)”every time I renew my residence card?

A3. If you want these, you will need to apply for these applications every time you renew your residence card.
